Jiva Healing Retreat, Turkey
Reliable juice fasting, healthy eating and yoga retreat in a herb-filled rural setting
Best for: Anyone in need of a thorough detox with sunshine and sea included
Not for: Those in search of luxury or afraid of self-administered enemas (though these are optional)
Takes up to 10-12 guests
Jiva Healing’s reliably good Juice Fasting, Healthy Eating & Yoga Retreat takes place at the herb-filled Yuva Eco Retreat on the southern Mediterranean coast in a quiet part of south-west Turkey. A beautiful rural setting, it’s just two minutes walk from the sea and also has a swimming pool. On this week-long detox holiday you can gently cleanse with a healthy eating plan or do a more intense juice fast. Daily yoga, healthy eating and nutrition classes and optional treatments support your detoxing process.
There’s nothing quite like guaranteed warmth, sunshine and the sea to aid the detoxing process, and this retreat offers stunning views of the Mediterranean coastline and is a short two minute walk to several different quiet coves ideal for swimming and sunbathing.
The rooms, although all comfortable and ensuite, are simple and on the rustic side. There are no spa facilities, though good massages are available.
Book Ahead for 2018
Jiva Healing’s next Juice Fasting, Healthy Eating and Yoga Retreat runs 18-25 June 2018 in Turkey – book ahead to avoid disappointment. Jiva Healing also runs healthy holidays at other locations around the world, take a look here.
Relax into the cleansing process with detox juices or meals, daily yoga and meditation, bodywork and plenty of downtime.
The daily healthy eating and nutrition classes will teach you how to put together meals that will be healthy, satisfying and fun to make. You will learn about macro-nutrient balance, times of the day for optimal digestion and assimilation, how stress affects digestion and why it’s important to relax while eating. You will learn about common allergens in foods too, and how you can avoid them, as well as effective ways of balancing blood sugar.
Chetana and her husband therapist Will Thornton offer a range of treatments during your week at an extra cost. Choose from a menu that includes Yoga Therapy, Thai Yoga Massage, Cranio Sacral Therapy, Psychic Readings for the spiritually adventurous and other holistic practices. Chetana’s sessions take place on one of the yoga shalas, which is very private and overlooks the sea, while Will’s treatments take place in one of the wooden bungalows reserved for sessions. If you want some spa action, there’s a hamam and spa a 25 minute drive away, and free lifts are available.
Yuva Eco Retreat is located directly on the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean Sea. You can swim off the pebbly beach or nearby rocks, and enjoy exceptionally good visibility and (usually) very calm and tranquil waters. There is also a small salt water swimming pool on the property just below the upper yoga shala.
Here you can enjoy nature at its very best, with big sea views in one direction and wonderful mountain vistas in the other. Land tortoises are often found on the property, as well as many different species of birds. Sea turtles can be observed in the water on any boat trip, and sometimes simply when you are out for a swim.
The retreat is located directly on the Lycian Way which is a 500 kilometre marked hiking trail connecting Fethiye to Antalya, and you can take guided walks or strike out alone. The views on this trail are spectacular and often lead to small coves or beaches for swimming and sunbathing. There are easy trails and more difficult ones, you can choose whatever suits your level of fitness.
You’ll have time out to explore the local area, for which transport can easily be arranged. The 2400 year old Lycian Rock Tombs located in the cliffs at the back of the nearby market town of Fethiye are worth seeing. There are also a number of stone sarcophagii carved in typical Lycian style scattered around the town, with one of the most preserved ones lying in the yard of the town governor’s office on the main street and the other on the middle of the road heading uphill towards the cave tombs and Kayakoy. There are two Lycian sarcophagi within walking distance from Yuva.
Pack light as storage is limited and you won’t need much. Yoga mats, blocks and straps are all provided so no need to bring any with you. Make sure you bring a good pair of walking shoes with you as some of the paths in and around the property can be rocky. There’s a hamam and spa a 25 minute drive away, and free lifts there available.
The torch on your phone will suffice for the trails, but if you prefer to bring a small pocket torch that can be a good idea.
When to Go
The retreats run in the Spring and Autumn, the best times to visit the southern Mediterranean when it’s less busy and the weather is warm but not as hot as summer and the sea is perfect for long swims. The grapes, oranges, apples and pomegranates at Yuva are in season and ripe for picking in October.
There are two main open-to-the-elements eating and drinking areas at Yuva and both of them overlook the Mediterranean. One has low tables for sitting around Japanese style, and the other has normal tables and chairs. Meals are self-service, and juices and dishes are prepared with love and care. The juice fasting menu features a large variety of fruit and vegetable juices, along with vegetable broth in the evenings. If you are on the healthy eating plan, you can expect mediterranean-style gluten free and dairy free meals.
Herbal teas are made from a wide variety of healing herbs that grow in and around the property. There’s obviously a strict no alcohol and no caffeine property. Water is offered freely and is clean and filtered.
Yuva is a family-run rural property that grows some of its own produce including many different varieties of fruit trees. Most of the water is heated with solar power and much of the outdoor lighting is also solar. Composting is de rigeur, and they even have their own chickens!
You’re encouraged to bring your own water bottle to drink the clean filtered water here, or they can supply you with a glass bottle to refill. Jiva Healing also uses some of its profits to support animal charities.
