Ayurveda detox retreats
An Indian holistic system of health dating back more than 5,000 years, ayurveda offers some of the most nourishing and rejuvenating treatments available in the world of wellbeing. The ayurveda retreats we’ve reviewed range from a hilltop spa retreat in the foothills of the Himalayas in India to a small, friendly hotel in a picturesque mountain village in Austria. You may choose an ayurveda wellness programme at a leafy coastal resort in Sri Lanka or an ayurveda package at a converted mill in the UK. Most people who undertake a course of ayurveda have a ‘panchakarma’ – literally translated as five therapies, the term also refers to a general ayurveda detox. If done for two weeks or more, this can be a very powerful way to cleanse, lose weight and heal. Your ayurveda detox retreat usually starts with a ‘dosha’ assessment, which identifies your body type, and will determine the best treatments for you. You might experience ‘shirodhara’, a rhythmic pouring of oil over your forehead, or ‘chavutti thirumal’, which is massage done with the feet. Massages are usually soothing and steam and herbal baths will be purifying. While some retreats focus primarily on ayurveda, you might prefer one where it’s combined with another activity, like yoga.
