Hike to Indulge review
Guided hikes & walking holidays in the UK
The Quick Read: Hike to Indulge arrange day hikes and walking weekends for busy urbanites who want to experience the joy of a good walk and Britain’s staggeringly beautiful landscapes in comfort. It was set up by Alex Murphy, a stylish former investment banker from Southern California who is now an experienced personal trainer and walker. Between March and October come on a group trip if you’re feeling sociable, or Alex can arrange something private for your family or friends.
More on the group hikes: Most group hikes are within 90 minutes of London in Sussex, Surrey, Gloucestershire, Berkshire and Oxford. Between March and October there are two day hikes a month, and four to six walking weekends away per year. Read a word from the queen on her experience.
More on the private hikes: Private hikes can be arranged within 2-3 hours of London led by Alex, or in the Lake District, Peak District and Wales led by mountain guide Rob Keet. You name it, they can organise it, from map reading skills, treasure hunts, leadership games and country pub tours to a half day hike ending with a strength workout and stretch. If you’re keen to hike in the Cotswolds, a cooking class or holistic treatment at Dalesford Organic Farm can also be arranged.
More on the weekends away: Accommodation on group weekends away is in three to four star comfy hotels with twin rooms. Climb Snowdon’s toughest route in Wales, for example, and stay a few nights at Pen-Y-Gwryd, a quirky family-run climbers hotel used by Sir Edmund Hillary when he was training for Everest. Private weekends offer more flexibility and a higher standard of accommodation – walk the South Downs in Sussex, for example, and stay at The Fish House, a stylish hotel with double rooms, hot tubs and excellent food where beauty treatments with visiting therapists can also be arranged.
Fellow guests: The group hikes and weekends away are perfect for people who do not feel confident hiking alone, want to leave the logistics to others, are feeling sociable and are keen to explore some of Britain’s beauty spots. If you want peace and solitude as well as support, ask Alex to organise something private that’s tailored to your budget.
More on Alex Murphy: Alex is an experienced personal trainer who specialises in resistance training, outdoor circuits, Nordic walking and trek training preparation. She’s trekked in some of the world’s most remote spaces in Canada, Indonesia, Burma, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Cuba, Ladakh, Uganda, Atlas Mountains, Kilimanjaro, Cuba and Peru as well as in the UK.
Costs: Day hikes cost £8.50 per person in a group of 24, £35-£45 per person in a group of up to 16 with lunch and treats, and £250 for a private group of 8 people with freshly baked treats and drinks (lunch extra). Group weekends away cost from £239 per person for two nights depending on the location, private weekends away cost from £190 per person for one night depending on the location.
