Es Cucons review
Arty rural hotel & spa on Ibiza
The Quick Read: Owned and run by the Rodriguez Castan family, this arty rural hotel near Santa Agnes in the north west of Ibiza is a wonderfully open place to relax. Looking over the Corona valley with its rustic almond groves, it has plenty of outdoor nooks and crannies to enjoy the peace and offers massage, facials and holistic treatments in a rustic spa. You can do private yoga, Pilates or meditation, go hiking on local routes or just hang out in the hot tub and by the serenely curved pool. There are three day ayurvedic rituals on offer throughout the season, while yoga retreats take place each April and October led by German hatha yoga teacher Annette Lengersdorf, to which English speakers are welcome. Open April-November.
More on the spa & treatments: Calming, petite local therapist and yoga and Pilates teacher Melanie Bendall, who has lived on the island for nearly 30 years, offers holistic treatments at the rustic spa, where there’s also a hot tub, steam room and two simple wooden treatment rooms. You can try everything from a Green Tea facial or a Thai massage to a Tibetan healing session and a range of ayurvedic treatments.
More on the wellbeing activities: Doing your own yoga or tai chi on one of the marvellous eras is a must – these are large stone circles on the property which were originally used by farmers to sort almonds and dry wheat. You can also book private Pilates, yoga and meditation sessions with Melanie – on the eras, or in a wooden-floored space in the spa surrounded by baby pink muslin. There are three day ayurvedic rituals on offer throughout the season, when you’ll have an ayurvedic treatment and yoga session every day for three consecutive days suited to your dosha and needs. Read all about ayurveda here.
Bikes are available to explore the stunning local area, and be sure to go hiking too – the hotel can arrange guides, or do ask us. The nearest beach is about 10 minutes away, or go on a cliff top walk for inspiring views out to the Ses Margalides Islands.
More on the yoga retreats: Yoga retreat weeks take place at Es Cucons each April and October. They’re run by German hatha yoga teacher Annette Lengersdorf, but English speakers are welcome. Annette teaches a powerful, dynamic but careful practice, using lots of props so that everyone is doing the asanas safely, whatever their level. She specialises in yoga for backs and has a qualification for Aerial Yoga. A week costs from €1380 (approx £1150) per person sharing or €1800 (approx £1599) if you are staying alone, including all food and classes.
More on the property: You’ll love the open feel to the place, which has lots of comfy day beds and nooks and crannies where you can hide yourself away. Watch muslin curtains flutter in the breeze as you refresh yourself with a juicy orange (there are bowls of them dotted about all over). Swim in the curved pool (a decent size for lengths) or browse the hotel’s enticing clothes and lifestyle shop in the reception area (the nearby village of Santa Gertrudis also has a branch).
More on the bedrooms: There are 15 interestingly designed, easy-to-be-in rooms with artful and interesting lighting (from the family’s lighting design company). Ask for one for a private terrace if possible. Room 14 is a suite that’s great for families. In total there are 8 standard rooms, 4 junior suites, 2 bungalow suites and 2 master suites. Our favourite is the honeymoon suite, set on its own hilltop with stretching views of the valley below. It’s a simple, free-standing cabin clad in green wood, with all-white interiors. Lounge on cerise velvet day beds on the large deck, use the private sauna or soak for hours in the outdoor hot tub (mojito or juice in hand).
Food and drink: There are simple mediterranean dishes such as spaghetti if you want them as well as more elaborate fare cooked by chef Jorge Castellonos. Eat in the indoor-outdoor terrace restaurant, where coloured glass ornaments hang from the trees and there’s a fire pit for chillier eves.
What’s lowly: It’s not open all year round, and it gets booked up quickly.
Costs: From €200 per person in a double room in low season to €520 per person in the honeymoon suite in high season based on two sharing.
Getting there: Es Cucons is in the Valle de Santa Ines in north west Ibiza. It’s about 10 minutes from the nearest beach, 20 minutes from Ibiza town and 25 minutes from Ibiza airport.
