A huge raft of research has shown what the yogis have known all along – meditation techniques have hugely beneficial effects. Meditators see their doctors less and spent 70 percent fewer days in hospital.  All manner of physiological problems (from hypertension to headaches, from allergies to asthma) improve when you meditate. Of course you don’t need a meditation holiday in order to learn to meditate, but most people find it’s the very best way to ease yourself into a firm practice. It’s up to you whether you choose a Buddhist retreat – which are still open to people of all faiths or none, just Buddhist in their focus – or something more general – such as Gaia House in Devon,  a mindfulness holiday in Morocco with Mindfulness Journeys, or Zen meditation classes on the Greek island of Lefkada with Serenity Retreats. You could even learn meditation via Skype with an online coach such as yogi and free diver Sara Campbell.

As you’ll see from our reviews, meditation retreats vary enormously. Some include yoga, others combine meditation with walking or other opportunities to be mindful. Some are quite monastic in approach; others take a far more laidback approach.  But whichever you pick, the end result should be the same – less stress, more calm and peace. Pure bliss.
